When you need to track your oxygen saturation level and heart rate, a portable pulse oximeter is an essential tool. These medical devices detect the blood oxygen saturation, which is a health indicator that doctors use for tracking and diagnosing many different conditions. Find out more about fingertip pulse oximeters below.

What is a pulse oximeter?

A pulse oximeter is a medical device that tracks your pulse rate and blood oxygen saturation. It consists of a small probe that fits around your index finger. The main unit has a digital display powered by batteries. Within a few seconds, the readout shows your heart rate and oxygen level.

How does a pulse oximeter work?

The pulse oximeter has an infrared light that passes through different gases at different rates. The light is built into a small probe that wraps around the tip of your finger.

What does a pulse oximeter measure?

It measures oxygen and pulse rates within a few seconds. If you have COPD, asthma, heart disease, or sleep apnea, your doctor may recommend regular tracking of your oxygen levels. If you've been diagnosed with COVID-19, your doctor may also recommend tracking your oxygen to make sure your levels are within the normal range.

How do you read a pulse oximeter?

The digital display is clear and bright. You can read it from any side. It shows the pulse rate and oxygen saturation. The pulse rate is measured as beats per minute. Oxygen saturation is measured as a percentage.

How accurate is a pulse oximeter?

A pulse oximeter is accurate within plus or minus 2%. If the oxygen level shows 97%, this means that your doctor's office would also get a result within the 95% to 99% saturation range.

What are normal pulse oximeter values?

Normal blood oxygen saturation in a person at rest is 95% or higher. A blood oxygen level of 92% is of medical concern and should be reported to your doctor or handled as recommended to you by your physician. Supplementary oxygen may need to be administered in this situation.

What are the advantages of a portable pulse oximeter?

Portable pulse oximeters work even if there's a power outage. They're a pain-free way to track oxygen saturation and pulse. No special training is needed to use one. They fit all sizes of fingers, from children to large adults. They're accurate at all elevations.
