TENS Unit Leads - Electrotherapy Cords, Electrode Lead Wires & Adapters

Electrotherapy lead wires connect the electrodes to the output channels of the TENS unit, hence their alternate names of TENS unit leads or TENS unit electrode wires. These e-stim lead wires deliver the electric impulses generated by the TENS unit to the skin area the electrode pads are attached to. For additional comfort and easy usage, opt for longer TENS unit wires that give you more room. Wireless electrodes are also available but they tend to be heavier and bulkier.

Most TENS units have one lead channel that splits into two electrotherapy lead wires: a black one called negative and a red one called positive. These attach to electrodes on one end and to the TENS unit on the other, forming an electrical circuit. The more channels a TENS unit has, the more electrodes it can run at once. For instance, a dual-channel TENS unit can use four electrodes at a time, while a 4-channel one can use up to eight. You can also use connector splitter leads to extend wires and double their number when you need to cover a larger area, but you might also need to increase the current intensity.

The first thing you need to do when setting up a TENS unit is to put in batteries or charge it according to the instructions it came with. You then connect the e-stim lead wires to the machine and to the electrodes and position the electrodes on the affected body area. Make sure the electrode pads are at least 1 inch apart, but not very far and certainly not on different limbs. After correctly positioning the electrodes, you have to set up the level of intensity. The patient shouldn't feel any discomfort and pain, only a tingling sensation.

Electrotherapy lead wires have a bent end and a straight one. The bent end goes into the matching socket at the top of the TENS unit and you have to make sure it is pushed all the way in. You then take the straight end of the wire and push the red one into the little hole of an electrode and the black one into another electrode. Once again, make sure the wires are pushed in entirely, with no metal showing.

While electrode pads last no longer than 5-6 months before needing a replacement, TENS unit electrode wires are more resilient and can last up to two years if properly cared for. To ensure they last as long as possible, always be careful when plugging the wire leads in and out of the machine and the electrodes. Never pull on the wire, hold it by the connector instead.

Some TENS unit electrodes need to be replaced after 30 days of intense usage, but high-quality ones can last for 5 to 6 months if you take care of them. If you notice that they start to lose stickiness, just wipe them off with a damp cloth and apply conductivity gels and sprays. To make the most out of them, it is recommended that you store electrode pads in their bag in the refrigerator between uses.
