How E-Stim Could Help You

Electrical stimulation, also called e-stim, is a type of physical therapy. A small device delivers mild electrical impulses to your skin. As a non-invasive, painless procedure, its goal is to provide pain relief and promote healing from injuries and nerve damage.

What is E-Stim

Electrical stimulation, also called e-stim, is a type of physical therapy. A small device delivers mild electrical impulses to your skin. As a non-invasive, painless procedure, its goal is to provide pain relief and promote healing from injuries and nerve damage.

How E-Stim Works

During an e-stim therapy session, the physical therapist attaches electrode pads to your skin. The pads are self-adhesive. One or more pads are placed in the areas where you have pain or are recovering from an injury. The therapist then uses a machine to set the wavelength of the electrical impulses. Depending on where the pads are located and the condition for which you are being treated, you may or may not feel your muscles contract. If you do feel them contract, it will be like an involuntary twitch. The contractions are not painful, and they last for less than one second.

How E-Stim Helps With Different Conditions

Physical therapists use e-stim for many different conditions. The impulses help block pain signals from different body parts to your brain. If you have chronic pain from a back or neck injury, it may lessen your symptoms by repairing muscle tissue and reducing inflammation. The electrical stimulation helps with motor control and muscle coordination in people who have neurological or muscular disorders. E-stim strengthens shortened tissues, improves flexibility and increases the range of motion in muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Uses of E-Stim

E-stim is used for many different conditions. People who have chronic pain from arthritis, atrophied muscles, rotator cuff tears or impingement benefit from the muscle strengthening and repair provided by electrical stimulation. The pain relief helps people who have had a tendon tear, such as the Achilles tendon. Some of the other conditions that e-stim is used for include:

  • Sciatica
  • Stroke
  • Scoliosis
  • Orthopedic surgery recovery
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Recovery after intense athletic activity

Benefits of E-Stim

If you're not able to use pain medications or pain medicines don't relieve your pain, the electrical stimulation may help. You might find pain relief after just one session of e-stim. However, most people can continue with e-stim sessions for as long as they need to. E-stim helps strengthen weak muscles, and it works in conjunction with physical therapy exercises, deep tissue massage, heat and ice. There are few side effects of e-stim, and it is generally regarded as safe for most people.
